Contemporary Basketry with Japanese Influence

  Workshops and Lectures

Because we are relocating from the east coast back to the west coast, I will be taking a hiatus from teaching. There are wonderful basketry workshops across the country - from your local craft organization and basketry guild to the retreat sites such as Haystack, Penland and Arrowmont. Check in with the National Basketry Organization often and consider joining.

I have so loved meeting so many of you and will miss the opportunity to meet more of you. Some of my dearest friends I have discovered in workshops.

Keep checking the website. I'll announce when I resume teaching with a smile.

  Previously

Most of the workshops and lectures in 2011 are new, many the direct result of my book purchases in Hawaii and New York City this winter. There are some wonderful new publications on Japanese wrapping available. If only I could read all the instructions. Once I master the basics, it is great fun to work up new versions for workshop participants. I hope you will join me for at least one!

I have been teaching basketry since shortly after my first series of classes with Rachel Seidel Gilman. New York City's Office of Cultural Affairs offered her a short-term job teaching free basketry classes in a vacant store-front on 53rd Street and Fifth Avenue. I drove in from Long Island to co-teach it, and a new career was started. We found it so satisfying to watch the participants' faces as they realized they could weave a basket in an hour right in the heart of Manhattan. I continue to teach and love every (well, almost every) minute of it.
